When Mocha Isn’t on the Menu: Our Twist on Pantone’s 2025 Color of the Year

If you’re obsessed with design like we are, then you know that there’s almost nothing as exciting as checking out the latest color trend. When we read about Pantone’s 2025 Color of the Year, officially known as PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse, we were immediately drawn to it. Who doesn’t like a color of something that’s described as nurturing “with its suggestion of the delectable qualities of chocolate and coffee, answering our desire for comfort.”

Setting A Mood with A Color

And if that were not enough, reading that this color captures “a global mood of connection, comfort, and harmony” was enough to get us motivated to dream up an inspiring Passover Table. Since October 7th, we’ve been praying and working towards exactly this. Normally, we have so many ideas and we need time to discuss and digest, but this color spoke to our aesthetic and mood.

Pantone and Passover

So off we went, ordering supplies, finding the perfect place settings, flowers, accessories, and of course, we featured our best selling Matzah Cover and Afikomen Bag in a new color white along with our Seder Plate and Matzah box.

Shabbat is our weekly inspiration, yet it’s Passover and Rosh Hashanah where we feel the most pressure to be creative and honor the holiday with an unexpected sense of style. We were excited about this one!

Pinterest vs Reality

We had a Pinterest board with ideas, but sometimes what you have in mind doesn’t happen IRL.

Not gonna lie. While it’s an incredible dessert and makes us smile just thinking about it, as table inspiration it really fell flat. There was also very little consistency in the colors that seemed to be Mocha Mousse and it wasn’t up to our standards. We just weren’t feeling it.

But that’s okay.

What happened? We don’t really know, but our aesthetic is more crisp, clean, modern with depth. It needs to feel sophisticated and fresh. Mocha Mousse felt too heavy for our tablescapes and modern Judaica that are meant to play with light.  We love warmth, but prefer it with contrast and pops of color. As we mentioned before, it didn’t help that what looked like Mocha Mousse on our screen didn’t translate well at our studio.

There’s an important lesson to learn here.

Trends Come and Go. Elegance is Eternal

These pictures show how we took trending inspiration and made it our own. At Apeloig, we’re grounded in modern design that honors tradition. Creating the perfect Passover table is about making it your own with items that are new and also passed down from past generations.

Find inspiration on Pinterest, your favorite design bloggers (and our IG feed, obvi), but make sure that you love how it turns out. If you're not happy, that’s okay.  Make adjustments and changes until you get to a place that makes you happy and proud.

We ended up with something that we are excited about. It’s a curated neutral table that feels fresh, not faddish. We were able to go in the direction of the Mocha trend, but not take it too seriously and this was an important lesson. It’s fun and interesting to follow trends, but it’s equally important to make them your own.  When it’s your own it feels special to you and your family. And that’s what creating beautiful holiday tables are all about.

So, when in doubt, keep it personal and purposeful!
